Project 1 : Proposal Development
In the first phase of this project, we were required to brainstore and develop a project proposal. The proposal includes a overview (title, problem statement, proposed idea, USP), project specifications (format, duration, genre, visual style), team roles and responsibilities, project delivery timeline. Then, we have to include logline, synopsis, story theme, characters and world descriptions in the slide.
Week 1 | 04/02/2025 - 05/02/2025
We first form a group of 4 and each think of a topic.
Group Members:
- Adriena Tan Yan Zi
- Chan Wan Qing
- Sun Chaoran
- Thanaphorn Daensaad
We came up with the general theme of "Perception Vs Reality". We each came
up with 4 directions and research on these 4 direction. After completing
the research, we put the whole research in a meeting to ensure everyone
finishes it.

Major Project 1 by Group 1.In the end, we did a poll vote on Whatsapp to choose our final choice before consulting with Mr Kamal to understand what we all want then compare what Mr Kamal wants.
Poll Result
Week 2 | 12/02/2025
In Week 2, we consulted with Mr. Kamal on the general direction and four ideas. We explained each idea to him respectively. Mr. Kamal liked both the first and second ideas, but ultimately suggested that we proceed with the first idea, Hungry Ghost, and further develop it. Then, he gave us ideas to improve the storyline. We moved on to delegating the tasks among ourselves to finish all the necessary components for this task.
Week 2 Tasks
A) Project Overview (Adriena)
- Project Title
- Problem Statement
- Proposed Idea
- USP
B) Project Specifications
- Output Format
- Duration
- Genre
- Visual Style (Chaoran - character, world references)
C) Team Roles and Responsibilities
D) Project Timeline (Wan Qing)
E) Story Idea (Han + Together)
I worked on finalizing the story idea since the Hungry Ghost Festival was my idea. After the story idea was chosen, I completed the story idea by following the 3-Act story structure. I then consulted with the team to come to an agreement on it.
Week 3 | 19/02/2025
We also had a meeting at the end of the week to finalize our story idea. We then divided the tasks among ourselves again to complete our project.
We presented the final proposal to Mr. Kamal and got his approval to move forward. We did some adjustments based on the feedback provided and submitted our work.
Week 3 Tasks
1. Script (Han)
2. Logline, Synopsis, Story Theme, Story Arc (Adriena)
3. Character & World Description (with Moodboard) (Wan Qing)
4. Character Sketches & Environment Sketches (Chaoran)
After the story idea was finalized, I worked on writing the script, since the chosen idea was my idea. The script took me a while as it took me a while to balance the horror elements of it while keeping it kid-friendly and educational, without it being too boring for kids to watch it. I had to do some minor adjustments on the script based on Mr. Kamal's feedback to us.
Act 1
Yun holding his pending with the locket open staring dearly at the seed inside reminiscing his past while suddenly he heard Liang calling for him so they could go out and play. A nameless spirit awakens in the Spirit Realm, a place where lost souls wander, slowly fading into oblivion. A hooded figure appears and reveals his tragic fate—he is dead and, even worse, forgotten. Without any memory of him left in the living world, he is doomed to become a lost spirit, cursed with an insatiable hunger that will torment him for eternity.
As the horror of his fate sinks in, he experiences the first signs of his transformation—his stomach swells, his mouth shrinks, and an unbearable hunger gnaws at him. Desperate, he pleads for another chance. The hooded figure grants him a single hope: if someone remembers him or he recalls something precious that left a mark in the world before the next full moon, he can escape his cursed fate.
Determined, the spirit crosses into the Living World but finds himself invisible, unable to interact with people or objects. As the Hungry Ghost Festival approaches, his hunger worsens, and despair begins to take hold. That is until he encounters Liang, a boy who can see him.
Act 2
Liang, though initially startled, is more curious than afraid. The spirit pleads for his help. Instead of recoiling in fear, Liang listens to the Spirit’s plight with curiosity and compassion. Seeing this as his only chance, he explains his tragic situation—if he does not leave a mark before the end of the Hungry Ghost Festival, he will fade into oblivion forever.
Liang, desperate to help, turns to Yun, his friend. However, Yun doesn’t believe him—to him, Liang seems to be talking to thin air. Feeling frustrated, Liang tries to prove the spirit’s existence, describing how the spirit reacts to Yun’s presence. When the spirit sees Yun, a fragment of his past flashes before him—a moment when he entrusted someone with a precious seed.
Liang asks Yun if he remembers receiving a special seed, sparking a realization—Yun was given a pendant with a hidden compartment, inside which the seed was kept. Realizing the significance of this gift, the children rush to plant the seed in the backyard. As they place it in the soil, something miraculous happens—a lush, beautiful garden blooms instantly, breathing life into the barren land.
Act 3
In the glow of the garden, the Spirit feels a profound change within him. The unbearable hunger that once consumed him fades away, his mouth returns to normal, and his form regains its human shape. At that moment, Yun finally recognizes the Spirit as his long-lost uncle. Overcome with emotion, Yun embraces him, solidifying the bond that had once been forgotten.
With the final night of the Hungry Ghost Festival upon them, Liang and Yun prepare a floating lantern, inscribing the Spirit’s name, Xu Chen onto it. As the lantern drifts into the night sky, Chen smiles, knowing he is no longer lost to oblivion. His story, his memory, and his presence have been restored in the world of the living.
As Chen fades peacefully into the afterlife, his story spreads, inspiring others to cherish the memories of those who have passed. The act of remembrance ensures that no soul is ever truly forgotten, proving that legacy lives on through the hearts of those who remember.

Final Script (The Forgotten Spirit)
Feedback
Week 2
Techniques:
Best to have 3D character
2D - drawing frame by frame, need to make sure the drawing is good and consistent
3D background - big enough, can show multiple shot
Target Audiences:
Instead of 18, try to make it 15 since after 15, their ways of thinking will be different [12-15 age group]
Theme:
Relate with current situation - social media - encourage people to check the truth/facts first
Ideas:
Idea 1 - positive, not scary, educational (2 kids perspective..?)
Idea 2 - can make it more local (eg. chicken leg house)
Week 3
Problem Statement: Add in what is currently happening, what we think about this in Malaysia
Unique Selling Point: Product Positioning - Put in some similar animations / graphics novel as references
Act 1: - Show that the spirit is not human (eg. the spirit can't pick up things)
Theme: Add the big theme (Perception vs Reality) and explain (human connection / remembrance), if have any sub-theme, can add in
Characters:
- Liang and Yun a bit too young, 10 y/o will be enough - young boy can see the spirit
- Transition of the Spirit between ghost form and spirit form should connect - can't see the connection for now
- Coco suits our story
- Luka father can be the reference of the spirit
- Pendant - if it's important, set up in Act 1
Week 4
- We shouldering develop more in the reference
- We can alter the story as we go
- Specify why these shapes are used to develop these character sketches, make sure it is consistent and not contrasting to the world
- Specify why this is Malaysian base, what makes it unique
- How do we want to animate this, we need to think about where we want to use 2D and where we want to include 3D
- What kind of rendering style we want to look at
- We have to start looking at composition of this animation
- Make sure it always goes back to the objective
- Can focus on the transformation of the spirit
- Write the things that I know
