Lectures

Week 1
This is the first week of class. Mr. Fauzi briefed us on the work that we will be working on throughout the semester. The assessment consists of exercises, project 1, 2 and a final project. We were assigned to work on an exercise for our practical activity.

Week 2
This is the second week of class. Mr Fauzi gave us a brief introduction to Motion Graphics with a presentation slide on it. We were shown how motion graphic animation were created with a combination of making vector images on ai, double exposure with ps and more.

Motion Graphics - a way to communicate with viewers and animation with text as the major component

Motion Graphics are used in:
  • Brandin3
  • Television Title Sequences
  • Storytelling
  • Creating Awareness
  • Explaining A Concept
  • Product Video

Introduction to Motion Graphic Slides

Week 3
This is the third week where we learned about composition.

Composition - the arrangement of the visual elements
  • Unity
  • Balance
  • Movement
  • Rhythm
  • Focus (Emphasis)
  • Contrast

Compositing Toolkit Slides

Week 4
On week 4 we learned about kinetic typography. We learned how to use different tools in Adobe After Effects to animate typography into motion graphics by different compositions.

Week 5
This week is week 5. We learned about different animation techniques.

4 Great Motion Graphics Techniques in After Effects

After the lecture, we had a tutorial where we learned on adding transitions with the camera in After Effects. To do this:
  1. Create composition in Photoshop or Illustrator
  2. Import to After Effects
  3. Create new composition
  4. Add camera and null object (controller)
  5. Connect the layers to controller and controller to camera
  6. Can play around with the layers by adding depth to them using position
  7. Can add text (as a new composition)
  8. Can add motion blur after finalising everything

Week 5 Practical
We are required to create a basic animation using advance layers and keyframing. I made the composition in Photoshop by arranging the images into separate layers.

Requirements
  • Download all of the design elements from this link: https://bit.ly/3cHoqZ6
  • Create 1080 x 1920 size poster (I.G Stories size) on Photoshop
  • Trace and crop the images using the Pen tool.
  • Create 1 composition and attach below (I.G poster)
  • Animate the composition for 5-16 second loop with sound (I.G video story)
Final Composition

Week 5 Final Composition

Week 6
We learned about keying and learned how to remove greenscreen. The rest of the time was spent working on our project.

Instruction

Project 1: Technical and Motion Graphics Sensibilities

Students are given variety of tasks from basics to advance that develop their motion graphics sensibilities by increasing their technical proficiency and knowledge. Each student will explore and increase their technical proficiency and knowledge levels in the appropriate software individually but also with assistance of peers and facilitator.

Based on the template given, study and re-create the animation. Animate your own animation based on the Principle of Form and Design. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ILgOwOsZcKjD7nIVwmXjlZV0aln4GPUc?usp=sharing

Part 1: Pre-composition
We need to use the template and create 4 motion graphics with different principles such as symmetry, focus, scale, rhythm. Then, we should render the composition.

Requirements:
  • Size & resolution: 1280 x 720 (HDTV) 25 fps
  • Format: Quicktime (.MOV) or (.MP4)
  • Duration: 8 seconds
  • File: P1_Name.mov
  • Submit YouTube Link
Before creating the motion graphics in After Effects, I found some references and ideas on Pinterest and YouTube for each principle. I mainly used basic shapes for the designs.

Final Part 1: Pre-Composition

Part  2: Composition Remix
In part 2 of this project, we can choose any pre-composition from Part 1 and make it into composition remix in the After Effects template. Then, we have to create a composition remix using the pre-composition for 16 seconds.

Requirements:
  • Size & resolution: 1280 x 720 (HDTV) 25 fps
  • Format: Quicktime (.MOV) or (.MP4)
  • Duration: 16 seconds
  • File: P2_Name.mov
  • Submit YouTube Link

Feedback

Week 4
It looks good and nice. Change the color of the object so it doesn't blend in with the backgroumd.

Reflection

DPI has prepared for this project that involves with the design principles that I was familiar with. From the notes given, I was able to grasp how to apply design principles in motion graphic, whether if its through size, color or opacity. After Effects was a fun journey and a fun tool to learn and play around with. I hate it sometimes when it breaks down on me cause it makes me break down too. Mr. Fauzi gave me a good feedback on making my outcome better.
