Project 3: Task Exploration And Application
For this project, we were required to choose one out of the three choices
given to create a working fonts. We were expected to create a designed font
and its application in the form or format intended to provide a solution or a
designed font that adds value to an existing use or experimentative output
that results in something novel and unique. The work can manifest into any
kind of format related to the issue being solved or experimented: animation,
3d, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, music video and
more.
Proposal
The week started off with brainstorming our idea proposals. There were three
options to explore on and I chose on making a font intended to solve a problem
in my area of interest be it graphic
design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area
not necessarily reflecting your specialization.
I had quite some issues trying to brainstorm which took up most of my time
during the start of the project.
Fig 1.2 Proposal
Mr. Vinod gave me the green light to continue my work during the font making
phase as he said the letters I was making that time looked unique in a way. I
was happy to get something approved and continued my work.
Idea Formation / Reference
Before proceeding on making the fonts, I looked up on some references to get
more inspiration on how to keep the details consistent on all the letters,
numerical and symbols.
Fig 1.3 Moodboard
From the moodboard, I noticed a few details that the creator repeated quite a
few times like the left one by using the same gap spacing size as the font
detail to make it look consistent.
Font Developing
I first determined the font measurement for both the uppercase and lowercase
fonts.

Lowercase making process
I made my first 5 letters which were letter a,b,c,d and e. Mr Vinod liked the
way I did my first few letters and told me to proceed with it as it looks
unique.

Feedback
Week 13
General feedback
- When displaying don’t put the capital letters and the small letters side
by side. Showcase all capitals and then small.
Specific feedback
- Make sure the point size is the same when displaying so you don't
mislead the viewers.
- Make better display presentation.
Week 12
General feedback
- Use the files in teams to guide you in kerning.
Specific feedback
- Keep up with the work and continue on the font presentation and
application.
Week 11
General feedback
- Print out your letters to see if it works well.
Specific feedback
- Work on the letter j and q better as as it will take more time to kern
the letter with the other letters
- Proceed working with the fonts.
Week 10
General feedback
- Compare the uppercase and lowercase side by side when adjusting the
letters.
Specific feedback
- Get feedbacks from friends in terms of readability to know if your font
is good to proceed to the next step.
Week 9
General feedback
- Compare it to an existing font to see the difference.
Specific feedback
- Try to mantain a characteristics when it comes to making the fonts.

Reflection
Experience
I sort of enjoy this task because of the wide range of freedom we have to explore in terms of brainstorming till executing it. I went through hard times thinking of some proposals to be accepted as I find it almost the same as other students. I opted to go with an idea after sir find the font unique. It made me motivated to continue working on the fonts. Transfering the font into FontLab was no issue as I did it before for my previous semester. The issue came in when it comes to kerning the letters but thankfully we were given a guide in Teams for it.
Observations
Through my observations, I would say that I find to forget how the letter p and q should be on the baseline and the stem has to touch the descender line. On top of that, I was reminded on keeping the size of the letters consistent a few times as I kept being inconsistent on it.
Findings
Throughout the captivating journey of crafting a font, my discoveries unfolded in a mesmerizing symphony of creativity and precision. As I meticulously delved into the art of typography, I unearthed the delicate dance between form and function. Each glyph became a canvas, demanding thoughtful consideration of proportions, strokes, and spacing. The subtleties of serifs and the graceful curves of characters revealed themselves as both challenges and opportunities for expression. In the end, I felt a sense of relief completing it and also surviving till the end.

Typography Design Elements To Consider for Print & Web Design
Kerning
- Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between individual characters. The goal of kerning is to achieve more balanced type – equalizing the appearance of whitespace between characters. This is important especially when it comes to headers and large type.
Color contrast
- Putting black text on white background is the most common mistake as it is too much contrast. Contrast is achieved by finding two colors that provides good contrast while it being a different color and value.
