PROJECT 1
EXERCISES
INTRODUCTION.
The self-portrait allows the student to investigate both historical and contemporary forms of self-expression and also to review the design principles covered and thus better inform their particular direction. They are also now free to use any media and to even consider working 3D or digitally. As with the first weeks of class, the classroom is a lab for interaction, experimentation and critique. Students explore a range of possibilities and are able to better determine an outcome through the critiques either individually with the teachers and/or with the class as a whole. They also are encouraged to look both critically and historically at the work of other designers and artists.
EXERCISES INSTRUCTION.
Create a portrait of yourself by applying the various principles that you had learnt through these weeks.
In your PROJECT 1 – SELF-PORTRAIT post in the blog, include:
1. a recap of Project 1 brief
2. your design process:
2.1 visual references (designs that have inspired your own)
2.2 2-3 idea exploration with short descriptions
2.3 final outcome in JPEG (A4 size) and a rationale
2.4 feedback given by the lecturer
2.5 a reflection about what you have learnt and discovered from Project 1
RECAP OF PROJECT 1 BRIEF.
Contemplate on your life experiences, which includes your culture, your family, your friends, your schooldays, your favourite hangouts, your favourite music, food, musicians, etc.
Observe your surroundings – people, vehicles, buildings, plants, signages, nature, and activities.
Record these in sketches, photography and/or video recording.
DESIGN PROCESS.
VISUAL REFERENCES.
The first thing I did for my references was to go on Pinterest for some game related ideas as I'm quite someone who enjoys spending time playing games during my free time.
I was inspired by the flow of the character sitting on the chair that shows the exhaustion of one's self. Therefore, I chose to try to replicate that sitting pose in order to show my exhaustion from the works in this sem.
Figure from Pinterest
Figure from Pinterest
In this figure, I was into the contrast made from the shine of the tv screen that matches well with the gloomy look of the room.
This figure was able to tell alot about this particular girl's interest. The artist used the unity principle through the compilation of items in the room to portray the girl's interest. I was inspired by the method used in the art. Therefore, I would like to try to use the following principle to show my interest.
DESIGN EXPLORATION.
SKETCH 1
My first sketch was to portray an idea of being pulled from the reality into the gaming world. My everyday struggle is trying to make progress in my work when my games are around.
SKETCH 2
My second sketch is focused on recreating my initial idea which was to portray myself giving up on life as I was exhausted from work. I'm not much of an introvert as I enjoy playing games with my friends while talking to them on Discord to recharge myself after a long day of work.
FINAL IDEA EXPLORATION.
I started off with choosing my sketch which ended up with the choice of the second sketch as the first sketch did not show much about myself even though I liked the idea. I chose the second sketch as it pretty much represent the person I am right now as I'm slowly suffering. The flow of my characters help portray the movement principle as it is shown that my body would be sluggish.
I was looking for an art style for myself to choose. Therefore, I went with more of a cartoony style with a twist of the eyes referenceed from the movie called Coraline. The button eyes was able to portray the emptiness that I feel in the middle of the night. Plus, I spend most of my time daydreaming so with the button eyes, I could make it seem like I was falling into a void of thoughts.
I added on the furnitures and added some colours. To show my interest and my social life, I added on the lobby of the game I mostly play which is Apex Legends and added my discord screen to make it seem like I am socialising with my friends online. The trashcan with the biology book was a way for me to show the past I had that I hated was when I was forced to take science stream during my SPM year.
FINAL OUTCOME.
I am quite happy with my outcome as it explains alot about myself as a person. I asked my friends on my final outcome and they've agreed that it does represent myself. Therefore, from my art, strangers can know a few glimpse about me just by taking a look at my final design.
FEEDBACKS.
I was told to add more stuffs that can represent me as a person or add stuffs that can show what im interested in. Therefore, I added some plants as I'm quite a nature person and some cartoon show references that I grew up with when I was a kid.
REFLECTION.
From this project, it's safe to say that I know myself partially. I brainstormed ideas to try to know myself with alot of questions like what's my interest which really hit me that I've never really ask myself that. It's amazing being able to describe myself through my design. I'm not really confident with my design as there wasn't much time for me to explore further.
