FINAL PROJECT

EXERCISES

INTRODUCTION.

After completing the self-portrait assignment, we were given a brief on the final project which is the Visual Analysis relating the 17 choices of Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG), We are then required to choose one out of the 17 choices and analyse it. After the analysis, we are then to create a work of design regarding the choice of goal.

EXERCISES INSTRUCTION.

Students are to utilise their understanding of design principles found in the design work. This project requires the students to assess, investigate, document and analyse a design material (billboards/television commercial/movie clip/work of design) of their choice. They should notice, size, placement, purpose, effectiveness, as well as aspects of design principles found in that work.

Thereafter, they are to produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one they studied on, or as a reaction to it. They should also apply knowledge of design principles in their design.

Final Blog: It must contain all the work you have done and completed for this module, along with a final reflection.

RECAP OF FINAL PROJECT BRIEF.

We are required to apply the design principles learnt into our final design regarding the choice of the Sustainable Development Goal.

EXPLAINATION ON CHOICE OF GOAL.

The goal I've decided on is zero hunger. Zero hunger has been an issue for a long time now and not much action is taken. We used to see news about it on the television when it first happened but not anymore. Food is one of the humans' necessities in order to stay alive. Due to the lack of food in certain countries, the unfortunates had to suffer through the pain then die of starvation which is horrible to watch as we the fortunates one have food in our kitchen. I concluded on making a design that shows the fortunates and unfortunates life.

Image 1. Alejandro Aranda. Mexico, La Busqueda (The Search), 2010.

I chose the image above by Alejandro Aranda because the design inspired me in a way to remake it the way I would that could give out the same story. I wanted to study on the zero hunger as I do sometimes wonder how hard life would be if you were to lack one necessity like food. To me, food is life whether it's good or not as it keeps us alive. To think about actually dying from starvation, it sounds really painful as I could not go through the pain that would be the same intensity as to be starving to death. I am grateful to have a place of food everyday and have a complete nutrients needed to still be breathing today.

The design is in a portrait form. For the visual elements, the main colours used in the design is shades of white, black and gray. Overall, it is a dull design but yet powerful. There's alot of expressive lines used to make the design seem fierce and full of power. The composition of hands is messy.

From analysing the design, the contrast of the black and white was able to show the dark truth of hunger in some starving countries. The asymetrical balance of the squares tells us that the people were kept in a cell away from the food which shows how hard it is for one to obtain food in the unfortunate country. From that, I was able to tell that they are desperate for the piece of food on the floor. The position of the hands surrounding the food emphasizes on how important the food was and how desperate they are for the food.

Alejandro Aranda has worked on behalf of marginalized groups in one of Mexico’s poorest states, Guerrero, for years. The design challenges viewers to discover, contemplate, and explore food-related issues from a myriad of cultural, faith, political, and economic perspectives, sometimes in literal terms, sometimes more abstractly, some holding close to the quotes, some unveiled with broader brush strokes, but all created with integrity using the universal language of art.

IDEA EXPLORATION.

Sketch process took me awhile as I had an idea in my head but I could not sketch it out. I tried my hardest to bring my design to live after a few tries. I am proud of the outcome of my sketch. I thought of highlighting the issue of hunger by making a design of the ones starving fighting each other to survive. As they say ‘Only the strong ones will survive’.

I did the line art so I can fix up the sketch above to focus easily on my next process which is the shading. So I ended up using stickmen to represent the skinny people who hasn’t eaten in awhile as it was hard for me to draw the poses I had in mind.

Shading the main element which is the hand coming out from the whole and the chicken drumstick to point out that my topic is food or hunger related. I studied the lines I could use to play around with the contrast of the colour black and white like the artist’s work. At first, it was hard to get myself to repeat the same pattern of lines to play with the shadows. Therefore, I tried to include other pattern lines to show the whiteness more than the dark colour.

FINAL OUTCOME.

I am somewhat happy with the result of the design. I applied the composition I analysed from the design of selected goal. The contrast of black and white compliments the main element well while accompanied with the stickmen that’s scattered around. I applied the expressive lines of emotions as much as I could though it took awhile for me to like it.

REFLECTION.

I learnt a lot on this project. One of which I learnt how to analyse a design then apply what I’ve found in my own design. The work definitely took time as I had to research on the goals before finalising on what goal I wanted to focus on. At first, I was confused on the brief but Mr Charles was able to explain it well to us and guided us through till the submission. I would say that I am kind of proud of myself to take up a new style of art as a challenge though I feel like I could have done the design better if I were to have more time to spare. However, I would say this project benefited me through the new experiences I had and extra findings that could benefit me in the future.
