Project 1: Proposal

The theme for the project is "Cultural Sensitivity in Design". We are to study a cultural phenomenon or a subculture that is seen as 'sensitive' and do a study within the chosen theme.

We are told to produce a 200 word write-up defining and interpreting the theme in relation to the chose culture. A minimum of 3 preliminary ideas to visually express our interpretation of the culture we studied using design language. Each idea is to be supported with detailed sketches and an individual rationale.

Project requirements
A Powerpoint presentation of the proposal that contains:
• 200-word write-up defining and interpreting the theme in relation to the chosen cultural elements.
• Citation is necessary as evidence to the research.
• A minimum of 3 preliminary ideas in detailed sketches, each with individual rationale.
• Visual references (visuals that inspire/influence those ideas).
• Reference list

We were to form a group of six based on the requirements given by the lecture. My group consist of
- Adriena Tan Yan Zi 0351236
- Thanaphorn Daensaad 0350930
- Chan Wan Qing 0350928
- Seh Zi Qi 0355872
- Chooi Cheng Yue 0355870
- Elysa Wee Qi En 0355060

Ideas Proposal Discussion
On the first week, we were tasked to do our own research on cultural sensitivity and brainstorm a selection of ideas according to the theme given before the week we got our group. Once group was formed, we got to discussing on every ideas we had that would be easy for us to work on. Some of the topics were relating in a way while the others are based on the current issues we see on a daily basis.

Before the elimination process, each of the ideas were explained by the choser to further understand the issue on it as it would make us to better understand what work we were getting ourselves into. From the ideas we poured out in the docs, we casted a poll vote to choose 3 of the ideas as we could not get ourselves to choose one idea. Everyone did their part by casting the 3 votes needed.

The results of the vote are Idea 1 (Cultural Sensitivity in Game Design: Creating Inclusive and Respectful Gaming Experiences), Idea 6 (Inaccurate Cultural Representation in Video Game Characters) and Idea 8 (Cultural Symbolism of Dragon).

Task Delegation
We then divided into 3 pairs to work on the research on the 3 topics. We made sure to include everything needed according to the requirements given by Mr Asrizal.

Idea topic 1 (Cultural Sensitivity in Game Design: Creating Inclusive and Respectful Gaming Experiences)
1. Adriena Tan Yan Zi
2. Chooi Cheng Yue

Idea topic 2 (Inaccurate Cultural Representation in Video Game Characters)
1. Seh Zi Qi
2. Elysa Wee Qi En

Idea topic 3 (Cultural Symbolism of Dragon)
1. Thanaphorn Daensaad
2. Chan Wan Qing

Research Task
The information on my topic with Chan Wan Qing is done on a separate docs to not make it complicated for the others to work on.

Project 2: Data Collection

For the data collection, we did an survey interview with professionals (in character design or design in particular) and interviews with students who are into the game or is into generally anime. This was the progress update for the consultation to let our lecturer know how much we've done.

I took up the task to find a few professionals to answer my questions. The first method was through finding professionals on Instagram by using hashtags like #characterdesign and so. I've tried to reached out about 9 accounts to get a reply but only one of them replied.

So I tried to get connections through friends and family which ended up with a total of 5 respondents in the end.

This process taught me alot on having connections helps alot when it comes to this kind of things.

Final Project: Final Outcome, Presentation Slides & Video

Final Outcome Making
I was put in charge to make one of the two cup sleeves with Wan Qing. My design is inspired by the water element of Xinqiu (right guy) while having the sky to sort of signify anemo for Venti (left guy). The color palette is derived from the color palette of the character's outfit. We used a site to help with the design making as we find it easier to use while having a really short notice of time to do it.
Site name: https://www.mycreativeshop.com/templates/cupsleeves

We realized that we did not showcase the characters fully which defeats the point of redesigning these two characters so I made a plan to make a promotional banner like the ones we see in most f&bs' collaborations. We decided to go with LiHo tea as it was our inspo in the beginning. Me and Adriena made this as quick as we could before the submission date so there's no progress pic..

Feedback

Week 5
Mr Charles likes the idea of our research although we had a few debates on it until he understands the objective of the research. He told us to go with what we have as he finds it interesting and would like to see the outcome of the research.

Week 6
Mr Charles told us to make sure the data is not bias to one side of the answer and advised us on what kind of research we would ended up with depending on the outcome of the data collection. He told me to proceed with my collection as he was surprised we were able to get some lecturers and professionals to answer the questions for the data collection.

Reflection

I find this module is helpful although I'm not fond with group works. This module has taught me that teamwork makes the dream work. Even though, our work was rushed due to the time we had to do everything. Other than that, this module made me see clearer that by having connections it makes things like getting data and insights easier as it just at the tip of a finger. I never thought I would reconnect to some people I've lost contact with and I'm glad I did as it would most likely help me in the future too. I wish we had more time as I feel like we could have done a better outcome but it does not mean that I'm not proud of what we ended up with. Thanks to the lectures who guided us throughout this semester although it was short.. it was a great time spent with them.
